Dutch Celtic Coin Cache

Posted on: September 7, 2011

Numerous rare gold and silver Celtic coins were unearthed in the spring of 2008 in the Netherlands by teacher Paul Curfs. Curfs found the first coin by accident while using his metal detector. Over the next several weeks, 39 gold and 70 silver coins were found. According to archaeologist Nico Roymans, who oversaw the dig, the gold coins were produced in the first Century BC by a Celtic tribe called the Eburones, that had resisted the rule of then-emperor Julius Caesar. This is only the third known Eburone coin find in existence. The silver coins may have been minted by a tribe north of the Eburones. Finding the two types of coins together provides evidence that the two tribes may have been working together to fight Rome. The value of the coins is not known but similar coin finds have been appraised at $200,000.Yahoo News: Ancient Celtic coin cache found in Netherlands (November 13, 2008FOX News: Cache of Celtic Coins Uncovered in Dutch Cornfield (November 15, 2008)
